Sintra
This UNESCO world heritage site is full of colourful palaces inspired by Islamic architecture, including the famous Muslim fortress on which still has an Arabic flag waving on top of its tower!
Mertola
The oldest surviving Masjid in Portugal from Andalusian era, built during the 5th century of Islam, is fully preserved despite being converted to a church. It is overlooked by a magnificent Muslim fortress!
Silves
The best preserved Muslim fortress in Portugal, it has been chosen as a national monument by 1910, and is now featured on the flag of Portugal! The courtyard inside has stunning gardens!
Algarve
Pronounced "Algharby," which is the Arabic word for "The West," the Southern region has more Muslim palaces, mosques, and Islamic artifacts than the rest of Portugal combined!

Ahmed ibn Qasi
Descendant of the Muslim Spanish revert tribe who ruled a Northeastern Andalusian state, this scholar & historian has a statue of him built in front of the Mertola Muslim fortress. Find out why!
